Four Eyes Volume 1: Forged in Flame is a graphic novel reprinted and remastered by Diamond Book Distributors. The comic features the artwork of Max Fiumara and was written by Joe Kelly, famous for his writing for Marvel Comics such as Fantastic Four 2099, Deadpool, X-Men, and more.
Four Eyes takes place in 1930’s New York and follows the story of Enrico, a young Spanish boy who loses his father to a dragon. After his father’s death, Enrico and his mother quickly find themselves in need of money, but most of the city’s citizens are also looking for work and fighting for jobs. Young Enrico harbors a hatred for dragons and is pleased to see that dragons die fighting each other for human sport. Fueled by his emotions, Enrico approaches Mr. Boccioni, his father’s previous employer, and asks for the same job his father died performing: dragon-hunting.
Enrico’s journey paired with a hint of dragon fighting and the suspense of the hunt come together to form a beautifully illustrated page-turner. The artwork features non-traditional dragons, shows glimpses into the desperation of the unemployed, and points out the vast differences between the wealthy and those living in poverty. The use of Italian brings the characters to life and gives off an authentic feel, despite the obvious fantasy within this work of fiction.
