The world’s No. 1 ranked golfer, Rory McIlroy, said that he ruptured ligaments in his ankle while playing soccer with some of his buddies over the weekend.
The 26-year-old posted the news with a photo of himself on crutches and in a cast on his Instagram account.
“Total rupture of left ATFL (ankle ligament) and associated joint capsule damage in a soccer kickabout with friends on Saturday,” he wrote. “Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started..... Working hard to get back as soon as I can."
The injury knocks McIlroy out of the Scottish Open this weekend and while his status for the British Open beginning July 16 doesn’t look good, it’s still uncertain. The golfer’s management company told CNN that there is a just “10 percent chance” he will play.
McIlroy is the a four-time major champion winning the 2011 U.S Open, 2012 PGA Championship, 2014 Open Championship, and 2014 PGA Championship.
Sports Illustrated noted that the Northern Irishman finished fourth at the Masters in April and tied for ninth at the U.S. Open last month. The world’s No. 2 ranked golfer, 21-year-old Jordan Spieth, won both of those tournaments.
