Instagram is angering a lot of their users by banning the hashtag “#curvy,” in what they claim is an attempt to eliminate graphic content being posted.
A spokesperson for Instagram confirmed to Mashable they banned the hashtag. Instead, when users search for “curvy,” they get suggestions like "curvyfashion" and "curvywomen.”
"I can confirm that we did block the hashtag #curvy,” said the spokesperson. “It was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity. Please note that the block has nothing to do with the term 'curvy' itself."
While the site will likely stand firm in their decision, users have skirted around the issue and have creatively started a new way to express themselves by using “#curvee” instead.
People reports many Instagram users complained that there are much more sexually suggestive hashtags still allowed on the site. However, #curvy photos are more often reported by users.
Most recently, Instagram has come under fire for pulling down photos that include women’s nipples, which has spurred the #FreeTheNipple campaign.
Earlier this month, model Chrissy Teigen posted a nude photo of her husband, John Legend, in protest of them taking down a photo from her W Magazine shoot, in which her nipple was showing.
