Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith was suspended by the league for three games following his DUI arrest.
The team announced the suspension on its website Friday.
“This morning the NFL notified the club that cornerback Sean Smith will serve a three-game suspension effective Week 1 of the regular season. We respect and support the league’s decision in this matter and will have no further comment on the situation.”
NFL.com reported that the 28-year-old faced a two-game ban, but ended up getting three since he hit a street lamp.
On June 10, Smith was arrested after he hit a light pole with his car. He was cited for operating a vehicle with a .08 percent or more blood alcohol level, driving a vehicle in a careless manner and failing to present proof of insurance.
Smith appeared in all 16 games for the Chiefs last season and had over 40 tackles.
He’ll be eligible to return on Oct. 4 when the team takes on the Cincinnati Bengals.
