The Portland Trail Blazers have acquired Brendan Haywood and Mike Miller in a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The trade will help create future options and save the Cavaliers luxury-tax money. The Blazer will get the highest second-round pick that is owed to the Cavaliers by the Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves for 2019 and the Cavaliers 2020 second-round pick. The Blazers will also give the Cavaliers cash. The Cavaliers will have a $10.5 million trade exception and a $2.85 million trade exception which they have one year to use and can use it to acquire a player under contract, according to Yahoo Sports. The trade could save the Cavaliers about $10 million in salary and luxury tax payments.
Miller signed with the Cavaliers last offseason. He is owed $2.85 million in the final year of his contract. Last season he averaged 5.6 points and shot 33 percent from three- point range and hardly played in the second half of the season, according to ESPN. He has averaged 11 points in 15 seasons in the NBA. Haywood has a $10.5 million non-guaranteed contract that the Blazers will probably waive. In 22 games last season Haywood averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds.
Miller, who has battled numerous injuries in recent years, could negotiate a buyout with the Blazers and become a free agent. It will be interesting to see where he ends up if he gets a buyout from the Blazers.
