On this week’s episode of Pretty Little Liars, Mona returns to Rosewood, Spencer and Hanna investigate Charles at Radley, and Ali continues to grow closer to Lorenzo.
The episode opens with Spencer having a nightmare. She thinks she’s inside the dollhouse and has a strange encounter with a little girl (special guest star Maddie Ziegler of Dance Moms). The little girl does a strange sort of interpretive dance, leading Spencer to a tiled room. On the floor sits of pair of sandals marked “C. DiLaurentis.”
Cue opening theme.
Spencer tells Aria about her nightmare while Aria hangs out at her dad’s office at Hollis. She asks Aria if she remembers a tiled room in the dollhouse, but Aria brushes her off, saying she’s struggling to forget their ordeal enough already without purposely thinking about it. Spencer also frets over whether or not she should accept Rosewood High’s offer to be valedictorian at graduation.
Meanwhile at the Marin house, Mona has returned to Rosewood. She thinks she made a mistake coming back, because she doesn’t feel safe. Mona is worried Ali will plot revenge for getting her arrested, but Hanna reminds her that –A is the real threat. Mona also has to answer to the cops for faking her death. She asks Hanna to drive her to the police station so she won’t have to go alone.
Simultaneously, at the DiLaurentis house, Ali overhears some cops dissing her.
At the Fields’ house, Sara talks to her mom on the phone. When Emily enters and Sara hangs up the call, she tells Emily she has to go home. Sara’s mom wants her back now and Sara has to deal with her. Emily wonders if Sara could stop dealing with her mom permanently by getting legally emancipated.
Meanwhile, Clark visits Aria at Byron’s office and asks if she wants to go to the junkyard with him. He needs to fix his photography portfolio. He’s entering a contest to secure an internship in LA at a magazine. Although initially reluctant, Aria decides to go to the junkyard with him.
Back at the DiLaurentis house, Ali goes outside to get air. Her dad sees her as he’s leaving for work and Ali tells him about the cops dissing her. Ken tells her to let it go.
Hanna and Mona go to The Brew before heading to the police station when they encounter Mona’s friend, Lesli. Lesli is upset that she’s being named as Mona’s accomplice and vows payback.
Later, at school, Hanna tells Spencer about her and Mona’s intense encounter with Lesli, but Spencer only half-listens. Hanna wants Mona to feel better so she’ll help them break into Radley, since Hanna’s not keen on going back there. Still seemingly distracted, Spencer becomes defensive when Hanna goes to take one of her weed cookies, leading her to wonder if Spencer is “buzzed.”
At the junkyard, Aria takes photos with Clark. While they’re shooting, Clark invites her to dinner, but Aria politely declines, saying she’s not dating. Clark tells her he recognized her from the news when they first met, though he didn’t say anything, because he didn’t want to make her feel bad.
Meanwhile, Ali and Lorenzo discuss the church position he set her up with but she worries how she’ll be able to work when the cops are watching her every move. Soon enough, Ali’s dad, Ken interrupts and freaks out on her, asking if she purposely replaced the cop who was dissing her with Lorenzo, since Lorenzo is closer to her in age. He also asks Lorenzo to leave.
Simultaneously, Emily and Sara ask Caleb’s help in getting Sara emancipated. Having gotten emancipated himself, Caleb knows the difficulties involved and tells Sara she’s going to need to prove she’s able to live on her own and support herself. Caleb feels that Sara should just wait things out, since she’s almost eighteen, but Emily isn’t willing to give up so easily.
Back at the junkyard, Aria spots –A and tries to follow them, but her plan is botched when she isn’t so stealthy.
Meanwhile, Spencer attends an addiction support group meeting and runs into her former sobriety coach, Dean.
Later at Hollis, Aria and Clark prepare to develop their photos in the dark room, when she notices a noticeable shot of -A on Clark’s negatives. She calls Emily and asks her what she should do.
At the same time, Caleb is still trying to help Sara. He says he’ll offer her a job at the web design company he’s launching and she can start right away. Sara is grateful and so is Emily.
Hanna calls Lesli while at The Brew, hoping to talk things out with her. Lesli eventually shows up and apologizes for taking her anger at Mona out on Hanna. Hanna tells Lesli Mona isn’t the monster in the situation; it’s the PLLs and Mona’s kidnapper who’s to blame. Lesli responds by making cryptic comments about Mona and Radley, advising Hanna to let the police catch their kidnapper rather than take matters into her own hands.
Back at Hollis, Aria steals Clark’s negatives.
Meanwhile, Dean drives Spencer home from support group. Spencer confesses she hadn’t been to a meeting in a while and needed reassurance. She also gives Dean the remainder of her weed cookies to throw out. Dean says Spencer still has his phone number and can call him whenever she needs to talk. After Dean drops Spencer off, she spots Mona putting an envelope in the DiLaurentis’ mailbox and asks her if she remembers a younger girl being trapped in the dollhouse. Mona tells Spencer the police rescued everyone that was trapped; there was no younger girl being held with them.
At the same time, Emily meets up with Sara and helps her celebrate her emancipation by taking her to a tattoo parlor. Later, Sara even convinces Emily to get inked.
Meanwhile, Spencer and Hanna sleuth at Radley. Mona had said she’d be there too, but she’s seemingly a no-show. Spencer notices a poster of the little girl from her nightmare and figures out she’d been picturing Radley, not the dollhouse. Spencer and Hanna also find Charles’ file, which confirms his death.
Back at Hollis, Aria examines Clark’s negatives and determines that –A is female. She sends a group message to her friends, sharing her discovery.
At the DiLaurentis house, Ali and Lorenzo share a moment when Ken interrupts. Ali also apologizes to her new beau for her dad’s behavior a day earlier.
When Emily finishes up at the tattoo parlor, Sara confesses that she saw the text Aria sent about –A and panics, running away. Emily eventually catches up with her friend, telling her she kept quiet about –A, because –A had threatened to hurt Sara if the PLLs snitched. When Sara spots –A watching her and Emily from a nearby rooftop, the girls take off.
Back at Radley, Hanna wants to leave, but Spencer is insistent on getting more dirt on Charles. The girls hear a noise and take off, only to find that Mona did show up and was following them the entire time. Lesli sent Mona to Radley to get her file and doesn’t want anyone to know she was a patient there. Hanna and Spencer learn that Lesli was hospitalized long enough to have known both Mona and Charles. Later, Hanna texts Ali about the breAkthough in their search, asking her to come over but Ken won’t let Ali leave.
At Hanna’s house, the PLLs share their updates without Ali and contemplate their next move. Hanna thinks they should keep close tabs on Lesli.
Meanwhile, Mona calls Lesli to tell her she got her Radley file, but the other girls caught her in the act, so they know. Lesli freaks out on Mona saying she screwed up.
The episode ends with -A burning pink hair to use on a doll version of Aria.
There will not be a new episode of Pretty Little Liars next Tuesday, July 7th. The show will return in two weeks.
