Pro surfer Mick Fanning was attacked by a shark this morning during a televised competition. He was able to get away unharmed.

The World Surf League canceled the J-Bay Open immediately after the attack, according to ESPN. The league stated that their athlete's safety is their number one priority.

Fanning, an Australian native three-time world surfing champion, was surfing in Jeffreys Bay off the coast of South Africa when the attack happened, according to NBC News.

"All of a sudden I just had this instinct that something was behind me," Fanning said. "And then all of a sudden, I felt like I started getting pulled underwater."

Luckily, Fanning's surfboard was all that got damaged.

"I was getting dragged under by my leg wrap and then I felt like it kicked me off, but it was still there and I was still attached to my board," the pro surfer said. "I felt like it was dragging me underwater, and then my leg wrap broke and I started swimming and screaming."

The World Surf League posted a video of the attack on their Twitter page, stating that Fanning was unharmed.
