Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova don’t have much of a rivalry. For the past decade, Sharapova hasn’t been able to beat Williams and that continued today. Williams cruised to victory in Wimbledon and will face newcomer Garbiñe Muguruza in the final.
The match between Williams and Sharapova was completely uneventful, with Williams winning 6-2, 6-4. At one point, she seemed behind in the second set, but Williams got into a groove and it was too hard for Sharapova to come back.
“I think she played really well and when she stepped up her game I was able to step up mine as well,” Williams said after the match, reports Yahoo Sports. “I’m really excited. I was a bundle of nerves out there. Semifinals at Wimbledon, it’s been a long time since I was this far here.”
Should Williams win on Saturday, she will complete another “Serena Slam” and would be the first time in her career that she would win all four Grand Slams in a one year, notes USA Today. It would be Williams’ 21st major win and her sixth Wimbledon win.
Williams previously completed the Serena Slam when she won four consecutive majors in 2002 and 2003. Since she won the US Open last summer and already won the Australian and French Opens earlier this year, she will complete the Grand Slam in one year should she beat Muguruza.
Muguruza of Spain is only 21 and will appear in her first Wimbledon final. She has faced Williams three times and surprisingly beat her at the 2014 French Open.
