New Late Show host Stephen Colbert appeared on the sixth season finale of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee today, and he offered some pretty fascinating insights into his departure from The Colbert Report.

In his conversation with Jerry Seinfeld, Colbert revealed that he was planning to leave The Colbert Report even before the Late Show gig was offered to him, saying that he was tired and that "the Letterman thing fell in my lap."

This is a pretty interesting new detail, as up until now it was assumed that Colbert left his show entirely because he was asked to take over for Letterman, but apparently that was just a happy accident and the timing worked out for both of them.

Colbert also talked about his relationship with fellow late night host Jimmy Fallon, saying that he has no interest in any sort of late night war. In fact, Colbert said that he and Fallon went out for drinks after Colbert got his Late Show job.

The comedian also discussed getting into the industry, talking about how when he first started he couldn't find any roles except for one bank commercial in Iowa. Getting into the early days of The Colbert Report, Colbert said that nobody knew what they were doing at first, and so he pretty much lived at the office, getting there first thing in the morning and staying until 11 at night.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will premiere this September on CBS. In the meantime, Colbert has been keeping busy putting out pretty hilarious videos and even hosting a Michigan public access show, as we previously reported.
