The Sharknado saga is not over yet. Syfy is going ahead with a fourth Sharknado and fans will even get to decide if Tara Reid’s April character makes an appearance in it.
At the end of Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No, which aired just last night, it was not clear if April survived. Just moments after the movie aired, Syfy launched a poll, asking viewers to decide if she lives or dies. You can also vote on Twitter with #AprilLives or #AprilDies.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sharknado 3 associate producer and Syfy executive Chris Regina revealed that director Anthony C. Frenette wanted Oh Hell No to end with a happy ending, where everyone is holding hands on the beach. However, that sounded too definitive an ending that would make it hard to make a fourth film, so they cooked up this idea.
“I wanted to take a page out of some of the classic television stunts that have been done and contemporize them,” Regina explained. “We needed to do something that was going to keep the audience in jeopardy and want to come back for another Sharknado. That led to the idea that I came up with in having the audience vote. Sharknado, more than anything on television, is a social interaction with the viewers, so we wanted to make it interactive.”
Reid told THR that she didn’t expect the ending and she seems happy that the fans will get to choose her fate. “No matter what happens, I'm proud to be a part of this phenomenon,” she said.
Let’s just hope that Asylum, the studio behind this franchise, comes up with a better title for the fourth movie. Maybe, Oh Hell Yes?.
