Louis C.K. has Louie, Marc Maron has Maron, Jim Giffigan recently acquired The Jim Gaffigan Show and now fellow comedian Tig Notaro gets a show of her own on Amazon.
An autobiographical series in the same vein as those listed above, the untitled series follows the stand-up comedian as she play a variation of her real-life self — a woman who recently recovered from an abdominal disease leaving her "gaunt, wasted, exhausted and pretty much stripped of everything except her finely honed sense of the absurd." The comedy sees her summoned to her hometown, Pass Christian, Mass., to take her mother off life-support. She deals with her "clingy girlfriend, her dysfunctional Gulf Coast family and the loss of the one person who held everything together" in the process.
THR unveiled the news. In addition to frontlining the upcoming show, Notaro also co-writes the pilot with Diablo Cody (Juno). They also executive produce the single-camera series alongside C.K., working under his Pig Newton banner. Initially plans were to have this set up on FX, where C.K. hosts his acclaimed self-titled dramedy along with his forthcoming new shows Baskets, starring Zach Galifiankis, and Better Things, another autobiographical series focused on his Louie co-star and producer Pamela Adlon. It recently moved to the streaming site, however, and they picked it up for pilot.
C.K.'s played a big role in getting Notaro recognized by the public, as he encouraged the comedian to sell her astounding Largo set as an album, titled Tig Notaro Live (as in "the will to live," not "live from New York), and hosted it on his site, where it sold like gangbusters. The special was rightfully acclaimed for how the comedian used her recent cancer diagnosis, mother's passing and C-DIFF diagnosis to create something as hilarious as it is frank. C.K.'s producing partners Dave Becky and Blair Breard are also on board as, you guessed it, executive producers.
This is just one things Notaro has going for her at the moment. Netflix recently distributed the Sundance-premiered documentary about her life, Tig, which she also executive produced. She recently wrapped a nationwide tour she began in January after her latest special took off on iTunes, and has the Showtime documentary Knock, Knock It's Tig Notaro, also recently premiere and has the HBO special Boyish Girl Interrupted set to premiere on August 22. This won't be her first time acting, as she also appeared in In a World..., Inside Amy Schumer, The Sarah Silverman Program, Walk of Shame and Transparent and soon to be seen in Still Punching the Clown.
