This week’s column is jam-packed with adventure and drama with a dash of animated comedy for laughs. The Revenant tells the story of a frontiersman in the old west, who is out for revenge against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling. Mississippi Grind deals with a down-on-his-luck man who teams with a young poker player in an attempt to win back what he’s lost. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip has the three chipmunk brothers getting into yet another mischievous adventure as they attempt to stop Dave from proposing to his girlfriend because they think if he does so, he’ll dump them. All three films are assured to keep moviegoers interested with their A-list casts and stimulating plots. In addition, two of the films have celebrities taking on roles that are more gritty than usual, which for their fans might be a blessing or a curse.
The Revenant is a dramatic adventure film set in the 1820s starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mad Max: Fury Road’s Tom Hardy, Lukas Haas, Ex Machina’s Domhhall Gleeson and We’re the Millers’ Will Poulter. The film follows frontiersman Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) as his mind is set on vengeance towards those who left his foe dead after a bear mauling. This western’s teaser trailer shows Glass fighting to stay alive amongst epic gun battles, an unforgiving frontier and a bear. It opens in January 2016.
Mississippi Grind is a drama starring Ryan Reynolds, Sienna Miller, Manhattan Love Story’sAnaleigh Tipton, Exodus: G-ds and Kings Ben Mendelsohn and Alfre Woodard. The movie revolves around Gerry (Mendelsohn,) who is down-on-his-luck both personally and professionally, so he teams up with a young poker player on a road trip in hopes of recovering all he’s lost. The movie’s trailer illustrates how Gerry meets Curtis (Reynolds,) how they form a bond and embark on a road trip to Mississippi to try to win enough money so Gerry can pay back the many people he owes before they kill him. It opens in theaters on Friday, September 25.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chipis a live action/animated comedy featuring the voices of Bella Thorne, The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, Jason Lee, Criminal Minds’ Matthew Gray Gubler, Justin Long, Jesse McCartney and Kimberly Williams-Paisley. On this adventure, through a series of misunderstandings, the chipmunk brothers think that after Dave proposes to his girlfriend, he’s going to dump them so they set out for New York City to stop him. The flick’s trailer displays the chipmunk brothers partying on their way to New York City and getting into numerous hilarious troubles along the way. It opens in theaters on Wednesday, December 23.
