The United States women's soccer team defeated Japan in the World Cup final today.

The U.S. won the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup by a final score of 5-2, making this their first World Cup title since 1999, according to CBS Sports. The win was the U.S.'s third overall, which is the most in women's soccer history.

Team USA was led by midfielder Carli Lloyd, who received the Golden Ball at the end of the game as the tournament's top player. She scored three goals in the first 16 minutes. At the end of the game, Lloyd fell to her knees as her teammates jumped around her in celebration of their victory.

Japan started to close in early in the second half of the game, with a score of 4-2. Two minutes later, U.S. midfielder Tobin Heath scored, bringing the score to its final 5-2 margin.

America's previous World Cup wins were against Norway in 1991 and China in 1999.
