George R.R. Martin has already started thinking about the ending of Game of Thrones and the A Song of Ice and Fire book series and, of course, it’s not going to be “happily ever after” for every character.

In an interview with The Observer this week, Martin said that he is considering a “bittersweet” ending and he’s taking inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings ending. He still hasn’t written it though.

“I’ve said before that the tone of the ending that I’m going for is bittersweet,” Martin explained. “I mean, it’s no secret that Tolkien has been a huge influence on me, and I love the way he ended Lord of the Rings. It ends with victory, but it’s a bittersweet victory.”

Martin is currently working on the next book in the series, The Winds of Winter. In May, he insisted that he will not write an episode of the upcoming sixth season of GOT so he can focus on the book. He even skipped out on the San Diego Comic-Con to get to work.

As for the show itself, HBO said two weeks ago that GOT will end with season eight.
