While HBO’s Game of Thrones has already moved ahead of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice And Fire, there might have still been hope that Martin could finish the books before the series ends. However, he unsurprisingly doesn’t think that’s possible.
During the Sasquan convention in Spokane, Washington, Martin told GeekWire that this no longer worries him. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are keeping the show moving much faster than he can write a novel. So, he has come to terms with the idea that fans of the show will know who finally ends up on the Iron Throne before readers.
“There was a period where I was worried about that,” Martin said during the Q&A session. “Then I said, to hell with that. Worrying about it isn’t going to change it one way or another."
He continued, "I still sit down at the typewriter, and I have to write the next scene and the next sentence … I’m just going to tell my story, and they’re telling their story and adapting my books, and we shall see.”
Martin is currently working on The Winds of Winter, which will be the first book in the series since 2011’s A Dance With Dragons. The author still couldn’t say when he thinks that book will be done.
Earlier this month, Martin told The Observer that he is thinking about a “bittersweet” ending for A Song of Ice and Fire that could take inspiration from The Lord of the Rings. Of course, he still hasn’t written that as he still has one more book to go after Winds of Winter.
HBO has said that Game of Thrones will finish with eight seasons. The show starts its sixth season in April.
