Fans may still be reeling from the tragic end of Grey’s Anatomy’s Dr. McDreamy, but ABC president Paul Lee stands behind the beloved character’s death.

Today, at the Television Critics Association’s press tour, Lee said, “It was great, wasn’t it? It was great to see Grey’s Anatomy so relevant and taking the national conversation in its 11th season. It was a difficult decision. Patrick obviously has a lot of interests outside. He’s very big in motorsport. Shonda decided that was the way to go.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, ABC intends to keep Grey’s around for quite some time. “We’ve seen the pitch for Grey’s next season. The show reinvents itself again. She [Shonda Rhimes] is a remarkable showrunner and we have no reason to expect that Grey’s Anatomy won’t go on for many years to come,” Lee said.

In April, Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepard, played by Patrick Dempsey, was struck by a truck and then died in a hospital that did not provide him with the adequate medical care he needed. Fans of the show were not pleased. There were rumors of a behind the scenes ”blowout” with costar Ellen Pompeo, and a cheating scandal. It was announced in June that Martin Henderson was cast as a neurosurgeon who will take Dr. Shepard’s place next season.
