Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell revealed on Friday that he has been diagnosed with stage 1 lymphoma and will be out the remainder of the season to begin treatments.

NESN noted that the cancer was caught in the early stage this week when he underwent hernia surgery. He likely suffered the injury by moving an equipment bag when the team played its series against the New York Yankees.

“Thankfully, it was detected in the hernia surgery,” Farrell said, adding that it is “Stage 1, localized and highly curable.”

Before managing the Red Sox, the 53-year-old managed the Toronto Blue Jays from 2011 to 2012. In 2013, he took over for the Sox and won a World Series Championship that same year. This year, the team’s record is a dismal 50-64 and the club is currently in last place in AL East. He has a career record of 372-390 as manager, according to Baseball-Referenece.com.

Torey Lovullo will take over managerial duties for the rest of the season.
