Broadway actor Kyle Jean-Baptiste, best known for his role in Les Miserables died Friday night. He was 21.
Jean-Baptiste died after falling from a fire escape at his mother’s house. His death was confirmed in a statement by the production he appeared in, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“The entire Les Miserables family is shocked and devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of Kyle, a remarkable young talent and tremendous person who made magic -- and history -- in his Broadway debut,” the company said. “We send our deepest condolences to his family and ask that you respect their privacy in this unimaginably difficult time.”
Jean-Baptiste performed as an understudy Jean Valjean and regularly played Constable and Courfeyrac. He made history this month when he became the first black actor to play Jean Valjean on Broadway, while also becoming the youngest to do so.
Earlier this week the actor posted on his Twitter account, “Thursday is my last Valjean on broadway. The ability to play this part on Broadway has been life changing. I’m so greatful.”

Other members of the Broadway community shared their condolences, including Kristin Chenoweth who said, “RIP Kyle Jean-Baptiste. My love and hugs to his family. And the cast of @LesMiserables.”
