Just like Amy Pond herself, Doctor Who fans will be waiting for the Doctor's return for much longer than expected.

Although Season 9 is already slated to premiere this September, BBC magazine Private Eye (via io9) is reporting that Season 10 of the series may not hit until 2017.

The report states that showrunner Steven Moffat's schedule is so busy with Sherlock next year that he likely won't have time for a full Doctor Who season. There has allegedly been an ongoing feud between Moffat and the BBC, as the network has been pressuring him to leave Doctor Who and fully commit to Sherlock.

The article does specify that there's no time for a full season, so it's possible we'll be getting a half season in 2016 and another half in 2017. That's what happened with Season 7, which took a six month break halfway through from September 2012 until March 2013. The wait proved to be excruciating.

Still, if this is bad news for Doctor Who fans, it's at least good news for Sherlock fans, and it's now clear Moffat is serious about getting the fourth season of that show done next year. For now, fans can look forward to the upcoming Victorian-era special airing this Christmas-ish, as we previously reported.

Doctor Who returns for its ninth season on September 19th with "The Magician's Apprentice." For more, check out the first official footage from the upcoming episodes featuring guest star Maisie Williams.
