Italian fashion designer Domenico Dolce of Dolce & Gabbana apologized for the controversial comments he made surrounding his opposition of gay adoption and in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
In an interview published Friday, Dolce told Vogue, “I’ve done some soul-searching. I’ve talked to Stefano a lot about this, I realized my words were inappropriate, and I apologize.”
Both Dolce and Gabbana, who are openly gay, came under fire in March when Dolce told the Italian Magazine, Panorama, “we oppose gay adoptions” and that “the only family is a traditional one.”
The two originally defended their comments, including those he made about children born via IVF procedures.
“You are born to a mother and a father, or at least that’s how it should be,” Dolce said. “I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalog.”
These comments led to a boycott of the brand from celebrities including Sir Elton John and Madonna. Dolce, however said in an Instagram post at the time that his statements were only “talking about my personal view.”
The fashion designer told Vogue in his interview, however, that he had a change of heart. “They are just kids,” Dolce said. “ You don’t need labels, baby labels. I think everybody chooses for themselves. I don’t know everything about IVF, but I love it when people are happy. It’s like medicine. Science has been put on the table to help people.”
