Nearly eight months after first hinting that Prison Break might be the latest series to make a comeback, Fox has officially put a limited series sequel in production. Both original stars Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell are set to return.
Fox chiefs Dana Walden and Gary Newman first mentioned the idea at the winter TCA Press Tour in January and, just last month, it was reported by TVLine that it is already in development. Walden and Newman confirmed the news at today’s fall TCA Press Tour panel.
Walden called the 10-episode series “a bit of a sequel, it picks up several years after the end of the series.” And since Miller is back, it will ignore the death of his character in the 2009 straight-to-video sequel. Still, it will provide “a logical and believable explanation to why the characters are alive and still moving around the world,” according to Walden, reports Deadline.
Prison Break creator/executive producer Paul Scheuring is writing the pilot episode already.
The project is still only in the development stage, notes Entertainment Weekly. But Walden and Newman insisted that they think the show will get the straight-to-series order. After that, Scheuring can get to work on planning out the story for the limited series.
Miller and Purcell both have roles in the CW DC Comics TV universe, making their debuts in The Flash. They will also appear on the midseason spin-off DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
This is the third reboot for Fox, following the returns of 24 and X-Files. Walden and Newman did suggest in January that another 24 limited series could be in the works.
