A TV series based on the beloved cult sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest, which starred Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver, has landed at Amazon.
News about the project first surfaced in April, as Paramount began developing the project. Today, Entertainment Weekly reports that the show will be available on Amazon Prime Instant video.
The series is in the very early development stages and none of the film’s original cast is attached. Amazon and Paramount TV would be very lucky to get any member of the original NSEA Protector crew, since Allen is busy with ABC’s Last Man Standing and Weaver has other projects. Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell and Tony Shalhoub also starred in the film and could be tough to get.
Robert Gordon, who co-wrote the original film, will executive produce and direct the pilot. Dean Parisot will also be back to direct. Other executive producers returning include Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein.
In the film, the cast of a Star Trek-esque TV series is recruited by a real group of aliens to help them in their very real fights. They actually thought their show was about a real space crew.
Paramount has been very busy mining its properties to turn them into TV series. Minority Report will air on Fox this fall and CBS has Rush Hour ready to go for midseason.
Amazon and Paramount have yet to officially comment on the Galaxy Quest project.
