Free-agent center JaVale McGee signed with the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday.
According to ESPN, the deal is a two-year minimum deal and has a team option in the second year. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, per team policy. McGee was waived by the Philadelphia 76ers in March. The 76ers still owe McGee $12 million for the upcoming season.
McGee was drafted by the Washington Wizards in 2008. He has played for the Wizards, Denver Nuggets and the 76ers. The 76ers acquired him in a trade with the Nuggets. Last season McGee averaged 4.6 points and 2.7 rebounds in 23 games with the Nuggets and 76ers, according to the Associated Press. In seven seasons he has averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks.
The Mavericks have been busy this offseason. They were going to sign DeAndre Jordan, however he backed out of his commitment with the Mavericks last month. Since then the Mavericks have signed McGee and Samuel Dalembert and traded for Zaza Pachulia. Tunisian center Salah Mejri has also signed with the Mavericks. Pachulia is projected to be the Mavericks starting center. However McGee could become the starting center if that doesn’t work out.
Before signing him the Mavericks looked at McGee’s health situation. McGee has played in just 28 games over the past two seasons due to health reasons.
