The original star of My Fair Lady, Julie Andrews, will direct the musical at the Sydney Opera House next year.

The actress, who played the leading role of Eliza Doolittle, is excited to come back to the production as the director.

"I look forward to... beginning the process of bringing this great musical to life once again," she told BBC News.

The 1956 Broadway musical in which Andrews starred in helped launch the actress' career as a Broadway, television, and movie star. Soon to turn 80-years-old, Andrews was "thrilled to have been asked" to direct the production. The actress will be in Australia starting November, and the first on her to-do list is to find the right cast.

My Fair Lady has been performed on Broadway and screen. In the 1964 film adaptation, Audrey Hepburn starred as the lead role, performing next to Rex Harrison.

The film won eight Oscars, two of which were for Best Picture and Best Director.

The stage production includes music by Frederick Loewe and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner. Andrews will be working on the show with the help of Christopher Gattelli, a Tony-award winning choreographer, as well as Lyndon Terrancini, Opera Australia's director. John Frost will produce the musical.

"To think that Broadway's original Eliza Doolittle, Julie Andrews, will direct our new production at the Sydney Opera House 60 years later will, I'm sure, excite both Australian and international audiences," Frost stated.

The upcoming theater production will premier in August, 2016. It will be featured as a celebration of Opera Australia's 60th birthday.
