Kanye West almost didn’t grace us all with his zany, often ranting Video Music Awards acceptance speech for the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award on Sunday. It’s now reported the Yeezus rapper went back and forth on how he wanted to accept it in the weeks prior to the VMAs.

West, who attended the show with his wife, Kim Kardashian, and some of the members of her family, contemplated not even showing up.
"He was initially going to perform and had many ideas,” a source told Us Weekly. “Then, he said he didn't want to come at all. Then, he said he would come and not perform. The day of the show there was talk that he might perform."
No one had any clue he was going to give the speech he did, during which he announced his 2020 run for president and admitted he smoked weed to take the “edge off.”
"Literally, up until he got onstage, no one was clear if he was going to perform or not," the source added. "No one knew he was going to do that insane speech or what he was going to do."
Taylor Swift presented him with the award, and she stood next to Kardashian in the audience while he gave the speech.
