Miley Cyrus’ hosting duties at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday have angered the Parents Television Council, who also expressed their concern over the “Wrecking Ball” singer hosting back in July when it was announced.
Not only did the council’s president, Tim Winter, scold Cyrus for her risqué behavior, he also took the network to task for their TV-14 rating.
"MTV had an opportunity to use its powerful VMA platform to stir a young audience to aspire to something positive and uplifting," Winter said in a statement. "Instead they chose to perpetuate blatant sexualization — much of it self-inflicted by the artists — and to celebrate the use of illegal drugs."
He continued that most parents of 14 years olds would find it “preposterous” to let their teens watch the program, thus the rating should’ve been adjusted.
Winter said the PTC was “about as surprised as we’ll be if the sun rises in the east tomorrow morning” that Cyrus flashed the crowd – albeit by accident – but hoped she would’ve “proven us wrong.”
“In the end, the network succeeded in what it wanted to do: Stir up controversy without regard to its impact on an entertainment environment that is increasingly toxic for children,” he also wrote.
Winter previously predicted the show wouldn't be "safe for children" when Cyrus was confirmed as host.
