Melinda Gates, who is married to Bill Gates, took social media by storm when a photo went viral of her carrying a bucket of water with women at a village in Malawi.

The Nyasa Times reported Melinda was staying at the home of a family and she helped the women there do daily activities such as obtaining water for drinking and doing dishes.

Melinda spoke of her experience saying, “Women spend much of the day cooking and then cleaning up. It’s a reminder that it’s a lot more time consuming to do dishes when you can’t just turn on a faucet.”

Melinda’s time in Malawi came during a safemotherhood mission and she has already made one previous visit. During this stay, she helped to carry a bucket of water on her head.

While she carried 20 liters of water, one of the women with her in the photo had 40 liters of water to carry. Women in the village do this every single day, which Gates mentioned in a Twitter caption when she posted the photo.

The former president of Malawi, Joyce Banda, also had a similar photo taken with a bucket of water on her head as she carried it like the other women in the area.
