Episode 2, was every Project Runway fan’s favorite challenge, the unconventional challenge. This challenge forces designers to create looks using materials that are anything but fabric. In past seasons designers have made looks with candy, hardware store materials, party store items, newspaper, produce, and pet shop items.

This season, the unconventional materials were Hallmark signature greeting cards. The designers had two minutes to ransack the Hallmark store in Midtown Manhattan. The designers had one day to create their look. This challenge really shows how well designers can work with materials beyond fabric, and how far they can stretch their imagination.

Swapnil: created an Alice in Wonderland inspired look. The skirt was brightly colored with flowers and butterflies. The top was elegantly done with different styles of poka-dots, stripes, and chevron in black and white.

Ashely: created a yellow poncho with gold diamonds. She was very lucky that she had immunity from her episode 1 win.

Joseph: created a box like pink shirt with pockets and a strapless white top with gold poka-dots.

David: created a gray hoodie (the hoodie itself was made out of fabric, a HUGE no-no for the unconventional challenge), with the words Hot Damn pasted on the left front and left back of the hoodie. The only part of the look that was made out of cards was the Hot Damn emblems.

Jake: created a cocktail dress made solely out of black glitter, that had hints of pink, card stock to create a scalloped texture. The glitter had a great affect on the runway.

Candice: created a strapless cocktail dress made of the silver that is on the inside of card envelops. The silver gives the dress a robot, futuristic look, but in a good way. It looked more like metal than paper.

Hanmiao: created a box-like dress that was covered in different colored envelops. There was even a letter that the model took out of an open envelope that was placed on her chest. The designer addressed the envelops to friends and family.

Gabrielle: created a loose silhouette cocktail dress using strips of red, pink, and light pink card stock. The colors blended together to flow from dark red to the light pink.

Laurie: created a gold matching skirt and top that played with multiple textures.

Blake: created a party/cocktail dress that looks like a glitter bomb went off. The dress is made entirely of pink and purple glitter cards.

Lindsay: created a laid back dress out of gray and white card stock, using gold emblems from cards as details down the front. The back has a nice cutout showing off the model’s back.

Kelly: created a sassy gold skirt that is made out of cut and scrunched envelops to make a fringe texture. The crop top, with a hood and razor back, is pieced together with triangles of sparkle gold, light pink, and dark gray leopard print card stock.

Amanda: created a black lace top (using white lace from cards that she painted black), with floral print underneath. The tube skirt is a frenzy of loops of envelops with different prints. The skirt has a floral print in the front, and dark pink on the back and side.

Merline: created a color-blocking dress using the colors blue, gold, and gray.

Edmond: created an absolutely elegant white wedding dress completely out of cards and paper. The bodice is made out of circles that have the Hallmark Signature emblem on them. The skirt looks like flower petals. He even made the model a flower bouquet out of paper.
