Ray Rice is finally speaking out about his infamous domestic violence with his then-fiancée Janay Rice.
The NFL player got candid about the incident, where Rice punched Janay inside a casino elevator, on Outside the Lines, calling it “the worst decision of his life,” notes ESPN.
“I can understand some people probably never will forgive my actions,” Rice explained. “But I think that every step that I took going forward right now—over time, I want to be able to rewrite the script, to tell my daughter that daddy made the worst decision of his life, but this is what I did going forward.”
Rice also took the time to address the seriousness of the attack and how it is a prominent social issue. Though the former Baltimore Ravens running back is very remorseful and apologetic, he understands that he will not regain the public’s support.
“To the survivors of domestic violence, I understand how real it is, and I don’t want to ever take that for granted because this is a real issue in our society,” Rice explained. “My video put the light out there—if you have never seen what domestic violence looks like and you look at my video, I could understand why some people would never forgive me.”
During the interview, Rice also discussed the “unique” obstacles he has faced on the road to making his NFL comeback. He explained that he is having difficulty overcoming the public’s negative opinion of him following his scandal, but he is trying “to honestly live day to day and stay hopeful for that opportunity.”
