Don Orsillo, one-half of the fan favorite broadcasting team that calls Boston Red Sox games for NESN, is reportedly leaving the network at the end of the season. Orsillo is currently calling his 15th Red Sox season.
The news was broken this morning on WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan Morning Show.
Orsillo has been calling Sox games since 2001, following five years calling Pawtucket Red Sox games, notes Boston.com.
Orsillo’s light-hearted style has made him a favorite in Boston and around New England, especially when he’s in the booth with former Red Sox player Jerry Remy. The two have created countless moments that Boston sports fans will never forget in the booth, including the famous pizza throwing incident.
There was also the time that Remy lost a tooth on air:
Leaving NESN could give Orsillo a chance to take a larger role on national broadcasts though. He has been covering MLB postseason division series at TBS since 2007.
This is the latest change Sox fans have had to deal with, especially as the team on the field has struggled for a second consecutive season. Last week, the team hired Dave Dombrowski as president, so there will likely be some changes to come during the offseason.
The Sox are currently 57-68 and in last place in the AL East. NESN and the Sox have not confirmed the Orsillo news.
