Singer and songwriter Sara Bareilles is expanding her talents beyond pop music.
It was announced Thursday that Barellis has landed a gig as a Broadway composer for the new musical Waitress.
Bareilles, who has a new album and book due to come out this Fall, will be responsible for the show’s music and lyrics. According to USA Today, Waitress will begin previews in March 2016 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in preparation for an opening the following Month.
The singer tweeted Tuesday, “My heart explodes with love for the cast of my show. Good lord I love these people. #waitress.”
The show is based on the 2007 film written by Adrienne Shelly and, according to Playbill, centers around, “Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker, [who] is stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. When a baking contest in a nearby county offers her a chance at escape, Jenna must weigh her commitments against a rare shot at freedom and recognition. Her customers, co-workers, and the town’s handsome new doctor all offer her conflicting recipes for happiness -- but Jenna must ultimately decide for herself.”
Waitress is currently playing at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Ma. The show is set to be directed by Tony Award-winning artistic director Diane Paulus, whose credits include Finding Neverland and the revival of Pippin and Hair.
