Actress Shannen Doherty, who starred on Charmed and the original Beverly Hills, 90210 series, revealed that she is battling breast cancer in a lawsuit against her former management firm.
Earlier today, TMZ obtained a copy of the lawsuit against Tanner, Mainstain, Glynn & Johnson. She claims that the firm took 5 percent of her earnings for managing her finances and that they missed an invoice for a payment of her medical insurance premium in 2014, which the firm didn’t end up paying. Her insurance was cancelled and she wasn’t able to re-enrol until this year.
She finally got her insurance back in March and went to a doctor who told her that she had breast cancer and it spread during her months without insurance. She blames the management for the diagnosis, alleging that if it was caught earlier, she wouldn’t have to pay for chemotherapy, a mastectomy or other procedures.
After the TMZ report, Doherty, 44, sent a statement to People Magazine confirming that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and has the support of her family.
“Yes, I have breast cancer, and I am currently undergoing treatment,” she told the magazine. “I am continuing to eat right, exercise and stay very positive about my life. I am thankful to my family, friends and doctors for their support and, of course, my fans who have stood by me.”
For its part, the firm told TMZ that it will fight Doherty’s claims, although it is “saddened” to hear of her diagnosis. “The claim that Tanner Mainstain caused her to be uninsured, prevented her from seeking medical care, or somehow contributed to her cancer is patently false,” the firm told TMZ.
