It’s been over two years since Steven Spielberg agreed to produce a Halo TV series with Microsoft and a year since the project landed at Showtime. Since then, the project hasn’t gotten very far, but the premium cable network insists that it is still in the works.
The project was first announced in May 2013 when the XBox One was announced. Then, a year later, Variety reported that Showtime was in talks to air the show. However, even then, Variety cautioned that it would take a long time for Microsoft and Showtime to figure out how the deal would work, since the show would be available both on XBox and Showtime.
During the Television Critics Association Press Tour on Tuesday, IGN asked Showtime president David Nivens if the project was still in the works. He said it was and essentially confirmed for the first time that Showtime is involved.
“It's still in development. Still in very active development,” he said.
But don’t hold your breath. When asked if when more details announced, Nivens laughed and told IGN, “No time soon.”
One of the initial plans for the Spielberg series was that it would be ready by the time Halo 5: Guardians came out. But that comes out in October, so this plan isn’t going to happen obviously. (Speaking of Guardians, Forbes reports that it will be the first Halo game rated “T” for Teen instead of “M.”)
It’s important to note that the Spielberg series is a separate project from the Ridley Scott-produced Halo: Nightfall.
