The late-night host, Stephen Colbert, has a lot of faith in one of the most controversial presidential candidates thus far, Donald Trump.

Colbert's Late Show won't premiere until Sept. 8, so he's really hoping that Trump stays in the race by the time the show goes on air.

At the Television Critics Association's semi-annual press tour, Colbert hinted at supporting Trump, stating that he hopes "certain people stay in the race" until his show premieres.

“Everybody does a topical show to a certain degree. I think we are probably going to do that more than other people just because it’s combed into our DNA," Colbert told reporters at TCA.

"It’s one of the reasons why I’m really happy that we’re starting on September 8. The day after Labor Day was traditionally the start of the presidential campaign."

Colbert also tweeted about how desperately he wants Trump on his show.

“I’m not going to name any names, but let’s just say I want to do jokes on Donald Trump so badly and I have no venue, so right now I’m just dry-Trumping,” the host wrote in his tweet.

“I just want to say that every little boy grows up believing that they could be president of the United States, and I’m so happy that that little boy is Donald Trump. I just hope he’s taking his vitamins," Colbert added as he talked to reporters at TCA.

"Please stay healthy until I get on the air. Don’t do anything dangerous, don’t ride any motorcycles, because every night before I go to bed I light a candle and pray that he stays in the race," he jokingly said. "And I also pray that nobody puts that candle anywhere near his hair.”

When the host was asked his honest opinion of Trump's chances of winning the presidency, Colbert proudly stated, “Honestly, he could. And that’s not an opinion of Trump. That’s my opinion of our nation.”

A reporter asked Colbert directly if the idea of Trump as president scares him at all. “You know what, there have been some great presidents and there have been some bad presidents,” Colbert replied.

The host couldn't pass up an opportunity to express his sense of humor. “Having a giant swinging set of balls isn’t the worst thing in the world,” he told the reporter.
