Jason Voorhees is headed to television, and it's on the network you'd least suspect.

According to Deadline, The CW is developing a TV series based on Friday the 13th. The new show comes from Steve Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle, creators of the 1996 NBC series The Pretender.

The new show is being described as a horror/crime thriller following a detective's ongoing search for his missing brother as Jason returns to haunt Crystal Lake. The TV series was announced months ago, as we previously reported, but it wasn't clear until now what networks would actually be interested.

We don't know a whole lot about the plot yet, but The CW hopes to ground the series in reality and focus on a cast of characters in the town of Crystal Lake. It will evidently reveal some secrets about the Voorhees family, something not fully explored in the films. The show has also been said to take place in multiple time periods, so could we see some flashbacks to Pamela Voorhees, perhaps?

This news comes two weeks after MTV renewed its own slasher TV series, Scream, for a second season. Along with the popularity of horror shows in general like Bates Motel, Hannibal and The Walking Dead, could we be witnessing the rise of slasher shows?

The Friday the 13th TV series does not yet have an air date, but the new movie will be released on May 13, 2016.
