Yesterday would have been legendary musical theater performer Gene Kelly’s 103rd birthday. He burst onto the scene in a Broadway production of Pal Joey in 1940, appearing as the leading role, Joey Evans. His first movie was Me and My Gal, starring alongside Judy Garland. He went on to star in, choreograph, direct, and produce some of the greatest films in the 1940s through 1980. He worked with other famous stars such as Frank Sinatra, Vera Ellen, Cyd Charisse, Leslie Caron, Barbra Streisand, and Donald O’Connor.

You may notice that Gene Kelly wears street shoes in almost all of his numbers. No, he did not have taps added to his street shoes. He would film himself tapping in street shoes and then later record the tap sounds in tap shoes. The record would then be synced with the film of him dancing in street shoes.
