The Oakland Raider signed troubled former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith on Friday.
According to ESPN, the deal is for one year and is worth up to $8 million with incentives. Smith was released by the 49ers on August 7, after he was arrested for the fifth time since he was drafted in 2011. He was arrested on charges of drunk driving, hit and run, and vandalism. On Friday Smith was charged with three misdemeanors relating to his latest arrest, and will be arraigned on October 6.
"Aldon is an extremely talented young player," Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said in a statement. "We welcome him to the Raiders family and expect him to bring his best every day and be a great teammate."
Smith was about to enter the final year of his contract before he was released by the 49ers. He is one of the most accomplished pass rushers in the NFL when he is available to play. In 18 games over the last two seasons he has had just ten and a half sacks, according to the Associated Press. While with the 49ers Smith had 44 sacks and five forced fumbles. He also made the Pro Bowl and was named a first-team All-Pro selection in 2012.
The Raiders waived defensive end Lavar Edwards to make room on the roster for Smith. Smith will be able to play on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
