Anne Hathaway has a long career ahead of her at age 32, but she’s opening up about how Hollywood’s ageism is already affecting her.
The Oscar winner isn’t bitter about it though, because she acknowledges she was once that young actress that got roles over those who were older than her.
“I can’t complain about it because I benefited from it,” she told Glamour UK.
“When I was in my early twenties, parts would be written for women in their fifties and I would get them,” she continued. “And now I’m in my early thirties and I’m like, ‘Why did that 24 year old get that part?’ I was that 24 year old once, I can’t be upset about it, it’s the way things are.”
Back in 2013, Hathaway talked about the biggest role of her career in Les Miserables, calling herself “very lucky” that she was able to at least get into the room to audition for the part.
“Once you're in there, all bets are off,” she said. “You can change people's minds. I did it, and I've done it before."
