Singer Zendaya’s 2015 Oscar look is being recreated as one of the most iconic children’s toys of all time.
Barbie announced that Zendaya will be presented with a one-of-a-kind doll modeled off her her look from the Oscars red carpet, done by designer Vivienne Westwood. The brand introduced more diversity into its doll lineup earlier this year.
“I’m excited to be a part of the new direction the Barbie brand is headed, specifically how they are celebrating diversity in the line and encouraging kids to raise their voices,” Zendaya said in a release, according to Entertainment Weekly. “It’s a positive message to send to my fans, including my nieces who are coming with me to the concert.”
Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic came under fire following the Oscars for criticizing Zendaya’s hair at the award show, saying, “I feel like she smells like patchouli oil and weed.” Rancic went on to apologize after she was called out for her comment by Zendaya and others.
“There is already harsh criticism of African American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who chose to judge others based on the curl of their hair,” Zendaya said in a post on her Instagram. “My wearing hair in locs on an Oscar red carpet was to showcase them in a positive light, to remind people of color that our hair is good enough.”
Barbie will display Zendaya’s doll at the Barbie Rock ‘N Royals Concert Experience on Sept. 26 in Los Angeles. Zendaya will be hosting the event, which will benefit the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.
