Chris Brown had to respond to accusations that he skipped out on a gay pride event in Atlanta that he was supposed to perform at on Saturday. Brown took to Twitter on Monday to respond, claiming that he was not aware of any show and his reps never told him about one.
Melissa Scott, the founder of Traxx Girls, a business that was sponsoring Atlanta Black Gay Pride Weekend, told The Georgia Voice that Brown was supposed to appear at their event on Saturday. Scott went on to claim that Brown did show up to their venue, but when he discovered that there were several gay men in attendance, he wouldn’t go out on the stage. He was apparently supposed to introduce singer Teyana Taylor, who is one of his opening acts on his current tour.
“I think it’s unfortunate for mainstream artists to take people’s money with the complete prior knowledge of knowing what the event is and being very clear about what the event is about,” Scott said. “I’m completely baffled. You know it’s gay pride. You knew you agreed when you sent the contract in and took the money.”
It turns out that Scott wasn’t the only one baffled. Brown tweeted a statement on Monday, writing, “I wasn't aware or informed of a show I supposedly cancelled. I have nothing but love and respect for the LGBT COMMUNITY.”
He continued, “The show was never confirmed by any of my people. So I apologize if the fans wanted me there. I honestly wasn't booked for the show. Hopefully in the future we can do it right. Much love LGBT.”
The Georgia Voice later updated its story with Brown’s statements but did not get a new comment from Scott.
Brown is currently on his One Hell Of A Nite Tour, which stops in Austin, Texas on Wednesday. He recently released Fan of a Fan: The Album with Tyga.
