Goalkeeper David De Gea has inked a new four-year contract extension with Manchester United, keeping him at Old Trafford until at least 2019.

The extension comes less than two weeks after the 24-year-old Spain international had been set to join Real Madrid for £29 million, but the move failed to materialize as the necessary paperwork was not filed in time.

De Gea, who joined the Red Devils back in 2011, has solidified his status as one of the premier goalkeepers in the game, making 175 appearances for the club, and winning the Premier League title in 2013 and two Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year awards along the way.

Speaking to through the club’s official website, De Gea said, “I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career. I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans.”

De Gea’s new contract will pay him £200,000 a week, a significant raise from the £40,000 a week salary he had been making, reports the Guardian.

Louis Van Gaal, the current manager of Manchester United, said, “I am absolutely delighted David has signed a new contract. He is one of the best goalkeepers in world football. I am very pleased that he will be part of the team for many years to come.”
