AMC played episode four of Fear the Walking Dead on September 20. Here’s the recap if you missed it.

The show opens with Nick relaxing in the pool and Travis going for a run. Chris is recording the neighborhood documentary-style. He says it’s safe inside the fence and that everyone outside the fence is gone. He then sees an intentional light flash from outside the gates. He shows Travis, but his father blows him off.

The power is off. When it comes back on, Travis lets Maddie know that he’s been called to a town meeting. Maddie is upset because everything in the house, from taking care of Griselda to watching Nick, falls on her. She and Travis argue and Alecia breaks it up. Alecia and Ophelia (Daniel’s daughter) leave the house together.

Maddie confronts Nick about not taking his oxy. Nick says he doesn’t need it, that he’s better. He tells her to give it to Griselda.

The head of the troops holds a meeting letting people know that they’re “infect free” for a radius of 6 miles. Anyone trying to pass the border will be detained. Ophelia asks about medicine. He says they’re working on it and tells everyone they’re the lucky ones to be inside the gate. Ophelia flirts with one of the soldiers.

The leader of the troops takes Travis aside to talk to a man, Doug, who won’t do the screening needed to stay in the community. The soldier says either Travis talks him down or the soldiers take him down. Travis finds Doug sitting in his bathroom, severely depressed. Travis tells him to tell the soldiers that everything will be alright.

Alecia breaks into Susan’s house next door. She sees an empty pill bottle and then finds a letter in Susan’s bedroom. She starts to cry.

Liza hooks their neighbor, Hector, up to a morphine drip. The wife tells her she doesn’t know what she would’ve done without her. Nick sees Liza leave through a hole in the fence. He sneaks in and steals the man’s morphine by injecting himself in between the toes, hiding under the hospital bed.

Chris shows Maddie the reflection he recorded. He tries to convince her that someone needs their help.

Ophelia and the young soldier man are making out. She asks him about getting medicine for her mom. He says he tried, but the lead soldier told him they’re stockpiling for when they try to take the city back. The soldier gets called back to work.

Travis and Maddie make love in their car. Maddie starts to leave. Travis makes a comment about how she’s watching her kids like a hawk. She tells him he needs to pay some positive attention to Chris and lets him know that Chris showed her the video. She fills him in on her suspicions of the soldiers keeping them repressed.

Doug’s wife shows up and tells them that Doug took his car and is missing. No one is allowed to drive inside the fence. Travis walks them home and says he’ll look for Doug. He finds Doug’s car empty.

Travis approaches the head soldier. Turns out they found Doug crying in his car. They took him away to headquarters to supposedly get him help and protect the town. Travis tells the soldier that his son saw a light. The soldier tells Travis that they went house to house, block to block, so no one can be out there.

Maddie flashes a light towards the spot where Chris saw the reflection. Someone flashes her back.

Liza shows up to find Hector missing. His wife comes in with a doctor from the government who has sent Hector to a government medical facility. The doctor takes Liza aside and lets her know that she is aware that Liza is not a nurse. The doctor asks her to pretend a little longer.

Maddie sneaks out of the town gates to investigate the light. In the outside city, she finds both sick and healthy people have been shot by soldiers. Soldiers are still patrolling. Maddie hides then sneaks back to her neighborhood.

Liza and the doctor examine Griselda. The doctor wants to take Griselda to the medical facility to see a surgeon. Daniel says he wants to go with her and the doctor agrees. Liza then has the doctor examine Nick about his need of methadone. Liza mentions that Hector went to the facility and realizes he can no longer steal the morphine.

Maddie tells Daniel what she saw outside the fence. He tells her a story about his government killing people that they promised would return home. He says Maddie must be prepared. If he doesn’t return, Maddie is to look after Ophelia. He tells her to keep Nick close.

Maddie finds Nick rummaging through Hector’s room searching for drugs. She unleashes her rage on him, beating him, and then leaves.

Alecia finds Nick with his face bruised. He refuses to let her into his room. She persuades him and asks him who did that to him. He holds back tears and she hugs him.

Maddie is upset and drinking in the garage. Suddenly the soldiers and doctor show up. They wheel Griselda out, but refuse to take Daniel. They say they have a second name to take – Nick. He tries to run and the soldiers head-butt him with a gun. A scuffle ensues and the soldiers point their guns at Chris and Daniel until Travis intervenes. Liza tries to fight the doctor about taking Nick. She tells Liza they need her at the hospital. She can come back for her son – the others need her. Liza climbs into the truck and the soldiers clear out of the house. Maddie tells Travis that she blames Liza then slams the door to the garage.

Alecia reads Susan’s suicide note. Susan killed herself because she saw a walker and believed it was the apocalypse.

The show ends with Travis seeing the light flashing from outside the gates.
