On the website, Rowling revealed his family did not make the list of pure blood wizards, known as the “Sacred Twenty-Eight,” because the last name Potter was not an uncommon name for Muggles and the person who put the list together likely felt they came from blood that was unpure.

For starters, we learned that his family were descendents of a twelfth-century wizard, Linfred of Stinchcombe, who was renowned by Muggles for his cures in medicine, not knowing he was using magic. His nickname was ‘the Potterer” and it soon just became known as “Potter.” Some potions were even traced back to him including both Pepperup Potion and Skele-gro. He amassed a considerable fortune that he left to all seven of his children.

It is his oldest son, Hardwin, that Harry is descended from. Hardwin married Iolanthe Peverell, whose grandfather Ignotus was the one who received the invisibility cloak that would eventually go down to Harry.
