Being Miss America isn’t as easy as it looks.
On Monday’s show Jimmy Kimmel joked about Miss America Betty Cantrell’s Deflategate response. Miss America contestants are asked to answer controversial questions with a 20 second time limit to answer their question, and are rated on their response. Kimmel decided to put regular Americans to the test.
In the segment “Pedestrian Question,” Kimmel took to the street to ask average Americans questions that came straight out of the Miss America pageant. Many responded exactly how one might expect. There were a collection of “umms” and other dumbfounded responses to the questions Kimmel’s producers posed. As it turns out, 20 seconds is not a lot of time to form an intelligent, articulate response.
During the pageant, when the newly crowned Miss America was asked about her opinion on Tom Brady and Deflategate, she responded with a nonsensical answer. “Did he cheat? Um, that’s a really good question. I’m not sure. I think I’d have to be there to see the ball and um, feel it and make sure it was deflated or not deflated. But, um, if there was question there, then yes, I think he cheated. If there was any question to be had, I think he definitely cheated and there- then he should have been suspended for that. That’s not fair,” Kimmel read.
Cantrell's wasn't the only contestant mocked after the pageant. On Monday’s episode of The View the hosts mocked Miss Colorado for her decision to dress down in a nurse’s uniform for the talent portion of the competition.
