Even though Johnny Depp’s dogs were not a laughing matter for the Australian government, the actor could only joke about it when he was finally asked about it on Friday while he was in Venice.
Back in May, Depp and Amber Heard flew to Australia for Depp to film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and failed to get the proper permits for their Yorkshire terriers Boo and Pistol. The situation escalated when a government official threatened to have the dogs euthanized if they didn’t go back to the U.S. Eventually, Depp and Heard relented and had Boo and Pistol flown back to the U.S.
During a press conference for Black Mass at the Venice Film Festival, Depp made his first public comments about the scandal involving the two dogs, notes E! News. The actor had a sarcastic answer ready for the press.
“I killed my dogs and ate them under direct orders from some kind of, I don't know, sweaty, big-gutted man from Australia,” Depp said sarcastically, as reporters laughed.
While promoting Magic Mike XXL, Heard said in June that they will try to avoid Australia “as much as we can.”
Depp stars as Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, which opens on Sept. 18.
