Quarterback Matt Cassel re-signed with the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday.
The new deal comes just three days after Cassel was released by the Bills. Cassel was scheduled to make $4.15 million base salary under his previous contract, according to the Associated Press. Terms of the new deal weren’t released, but the Bills supposedly lowered his salary under the new deal. Cassel will be the backup for starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor. EJ Manuel will be the team’s number three quarterback.
''As I've said from Day 1, we like all three of the guys and we never wanted to lose anybody obviously, so that's why we made the decision we did,'' Bills coach Rex Ryan said. "Those three guys, they work in concert with each other. That's important. They push each other, yet they're there for each other, they watch tape together. It's really a unique deal. We liked all three, and we kept all three."
Cassel was acquired by the Bills in March in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings. He played four possessions this preseason, completing 13 of 15 passes for 83 yards, according to ESPN. Cassel has a 33-38 record in his career.
The Bills waived rookie tight end Nick O’Leary to make room on the roster for Cassel.
