Lesson learned: Don’t mess with gamers.
On Monday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, Kimmel talked about a nerve he struck with the world of gamers. On Friday’s episode of his show, Kimmel mocked those who watch videos of other people playing video games. He aired a sketch about a (fake) new service offered by YouTube called Youtube Gaming, a service that allows you to “watch other people play the hottest new games.” You can also watch the people watching the video games and so on, in a never-ending vortex.
As it turns out, the gaming community is easily offended, and not great at taking a joke. “About three or four times a year, sometimes more, sometimes less, a large group of people bans together to get mad at me,” Kimmel said on Monday’s show. “On Friday I talked about YouTube Gaming as a new YouTube platform on which people who play video games can watch other people play video games. And of course I made fun of this, because there are people watching other people play video games, which to me seems ridiculous,” Kimmel shared. Friday’s sketch is the most disliked video the show has ever shared on YouTube. The host said that not only are people wishing illness and death on him, they are also wishing harm to his wife and children.
Here is the clip from Monday’s episode, which parallels the show’s popular “Mean Tweets” segment.
Below is the video that caused the uproar.
Both videos are worth watching. If anything we learned some gamers are on the touchy side. Kimmel suggests we could all use to “go outside and play.” But nah, let’s just watch a video of other people playing outside.
