Tuesday night ABC brought out its new Muppet show for adults, titled simply The Muppets. If you missed it and want to catch up, continue reading.
The show opens with Kermit saying that its tricky working with his ex, Piggy. He holds a meeting before Piggy’s talk show. Kermit informs them of a mistake they made the night before. Dr. Teeth suggests they have a meeting every day to avoid confusion. When Kermit says that’s what they’re currently attending, Zoot starts introducing himself like it’s AA. Dr. Teeth stops him saying that’s the wrong kind of meeting. Sam the Eagle then reads a list of words they are not allowed to say on the air and Kermit announces that the behind the scenes documentary crew wants more interviews.
Piggy sees Kermit and proceeds to make several silly demands as the star of the show. She then goes on to tell Kermit to lose Elizabeth Banks who is supposed to be the guest on her next show. Kermit tries to change her mind, but it doesn’t work.
Kermit says he used to find Piggy spontaneous and quirky, but now that they’re not dating, he thinks she’s a lunatic. He says his life is a bacon wrapped hell on earth. Sam the Eagle pipes up that he can’t say hell.
Kermit interviews Tom Bergeron from Dancing with the Stars to stand in for Elizabeth Banks on Piggy’s next show. When he leaves, Kermit confronts Scooter of walking onto a stage full of stars and coming back with Tom. Tom hears him. Kermit apologizes and Tom says he’ll still do it.
Fozzie visits his girlfriend’s house. Her parents don’t like him. They make comments about how he likes the salmon and ask if their grandchildren will go to the bathroom in the woods. Fozzie says that’s an offensive sterotype, then goes back to trying to impress them. His girlfriend stands up for him and says that he’s a star on Miss Piggy’s show. His girlfriend’s mom loves Piggy, so he offers to introduce them.
Gonzo shows Kermit his skit for Tom for the next show. Kermit hates it. Kermit’s new girlfriend, Denise, comes in. Kermit explains that she runs marketing for the network and that they met at a cross-promotional synergy meeting where they ended up “cross-promoting.” He admits to having a thing for pigs.
Kermit complains to Denise that Piggy cancelled Elizabeth Banks. He’s stress eating. Denise points out that Piggy and Elizabeth have bad history from a terrible Hunger Games audition. Kermit decides that’s ridiculous and will keep Elizabeth Banks on the show.
Kermit holds another meeting the next day. He announces that the first guest will be Elizabeth Banks. Everyone is shocked. Kermit says Piggy won’t say a word about it because they’re all going to keep it a secret until the show. Elizabeth then shows up at the meeting saying she came early to spend time with Piggy. Kermit asks Scooter to take her on a long tour. Elizabeth asks Scooter to turn back and end the tour, but he refuses. They argue and she kicks him out of the golf cart.
Fozzie brings his girlfriend’s family up on stage to show them around. Kermit introduces Piggy to the musical guest, Imagine Dragons. Elizabeth Banks then shows up on stage and Piggy freaks out. Fozzie tries to introduce Piggy to his girlfriend’s parents and she calls him a worthless piece of fur. Fozzie tries to play it off as a joke by saying the same thing to another Muppet, who then throws Fozzie across the stage.
Fozzie doesn’t impress his girlfriend’s parents, who then leave. His girlfriend tells him that all that matters is she loves him. He says that’s not enough and runs after her parents.
Kermit tries to talk Piggy down by telling her that he didn’t handle it the right way, but he doesn’t understand why she doesn’t want Elizabeth on the show. She tells it’s because Elizabeth Banks was on a poster outside the theater where they broke up. The show then cuts to their break up scene. Kermit apologizes to Piggy for forgetting and says they should always be honest with each other. She then honestly insults him.
Piggy does her show with Elizabeth. Kermit asks Scooter if anyone let Tom know he was bumped. Tom hears them and says he figured it out, walking sadly out of the room. Scooter tells Kermit he’ll send Tom a salami basket.
The show ends with Imagine Dragons playing along with the Electric Mayhem. Statler and Waldorf end with a joke.
