Last night, NCIS: Los Angeles came back with a vengeance with an episode that saw Agent Callen going off the grid in a bid to search for Arkady Kolchek, the man who holds the key to his past. As Callen approaches dangerous Russian individuals for help, his team faces the possibility they will have to bring him in.

As this is happening, Marty Deeks is still reeling from the LAPD Internal Affairs investigation against him. He really is unsure of why he would be under investigation and his partner, Kensi, is hoping he will be up front with her. He reveals some information on his background, but other than that, it is a mystery as to why he is under suspicion.

This was a good episode to start the season and it tied in key storylines that were brought up near the end of last season. If you’ll remember from our season finale top ten, we discovered Callen’s father could be alive so there is still more to learn about our agent Callen as he investigates something without his team knowing. This first episode set up the rest of the season nicely and we’re looking forward to seeing what happens.

Let’s take a look at some of the top key moments in this episode that brought everything together for the team.

10. Saving Callen

When the episode began, Callen was getting information from someone he was meeting with. But as he is making his way through an alley, he realizes someone is following him. It turns out to be Sam and Callen didn’t realize that someone else was also on his tail. Sam shoots someone before he can hurt Callen.

9. Off the grid

Callen disappears from his team as he attempts to find information on the whereabouts of Arkady Kolchek. This does not sit well with Hetty or Owen since he is refusing to even talk to Hetty.

8. Party Marty

In this hilarious scene, Kensi and Deeks are working out when some girls begin saying hi to him. Kensi is, of course, very curious and slightly jealous of why these girls know him and he tries to play it off. When a group of girls call him “Party Marty,” he figures it was because of his old party ways and Kensi shoves him off his bicycle.

7. Not talking

Throughout the episode, we learn Callen has been meeting with people in order to find information, including CIA Agent Vostanik Sabatino, who was giving him information on Anatoli Kirkin. During his meeting with Sabatino, there was a man following Sabatino and he was the one Sam ends up shooting when the man was likely trying to get Callen in order to get Sabatino. It becomes clear to the team that Callen is trying to find information leading to Arkady’s whereabouts since he had gone missing and was likely in hiding. Throughout all this, Callen refuses to talk to Hetty and walks away from her at one point.

6. Weapons training?

Our loveable, sweet computer geek Eric has decided he wants to learn how to use a gun and Hetty said this was alright. Of course, for Sam, this is not good at all and while he is willing to train Eric the proper way, he wants Eric to focus on finding Callen before they do anything. Sam is amused when Eric asks for fighting lessons, which he responds that they will do things a step at a time.

5. Painting

Callen is looking into information on Arkady and he goes looking for Anatoli Kirkin for information. He says he will help Callen only if he steals back a painting that was taken from him by a man named Artem Kunetzov. Callen agrees to do this, although this may not be the best choice.

4. Tasered

The team locates Callen, but he is still taking evasive action from his co-workers. Hetty is close enough to him and when Callen refuses to surrender, she goes as far as to tase him. However, he is able to get up and escape where Sam finds him.

3. Stakeout

In an emotional moment, Deeks and Kensi are on a stakeout when Deeks starts talking about why IA is looking into him. Kensi wants to know if there is anything he needs to tell her. The only thing he can think of is the fact that his first partner was someone who was so old school that he used boiling hot coffee on a suspect. When Deeks spoke up, no one would work with him so he ended up doing undercover work. He doesn’t think the investigation is due to that and he really can’t think of any reason why they are looking into him.
