ABC no longer wants to hear whispers. The network cancelled the drama The Whispers after just one season.
Executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the drama featured a group of children who have been speaking to the same invisible friend, which leads to danger for everyone.
According to Variety, it did debut strong with a 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, but its Aug. 31 finale only mustered a 0.7 rating in the demo. The finale only earned 2.75 million total viewers.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that the show’s first season cast, which included Lily Rabe, Barry Sloane and Milo Ventimiglia, were only signed through June 30. The network thought about a second season with a different cast, but ultimately opted not to.
Mistresses might be the only returning scripted summer series for ABC. The network also cancelled Rookie Blue and Astronaut Wives Club was a limited series.
The Whispers was from Amblin TV, which has been struggling as of late, since Under the dome and Extant have both been cancelled by CBS. Fox has also cut down Minority Report’s first season and TNT’s Falling Skies finished its run.
